A demon who has assumed the form of a cow.
~ Description from Ritual of the Night

Zagan is an enemy in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Origins[]

Zagan (or Zagam) is a Great King and President of Hell, commanding over thirty-three legions of demons. He makes men witty; he can also turn wine into water, water into wine, and blood into wine (according to Pseudomonarchia Daemonum blood into oil, oil into blood, and a fool into a wise man). Other of his powers is that of turning metals into coins that are made with that metal (i.e., gold into a gold coin, copper into a copper coin, etc.). Zagan is depicted as a griffin-winged bull that turns into a man after a while.

Description[]

A winged bovine-like demon that inhabits the Garden of Silence. Evident by its bulky frame, Zagan is more resilient than most other enemies in this area. It mainly attacks by charging at the player, although it is also possible to stand on its back without taking damage. If the player stands on its back, Zagan will start summoning Light Elementals, making it a viable way of obtaining the Resist Light shard by repeatedly killing these summoned enemies.

Zagan rarely drops Beast Milk (as well as Rennet, among other drops), which allows the preparation of a whole new batch of foods by that point in the game, many of which increase LCK (like the Sponge Cake and the Flan), as well as preparing the Heavy Cream ingredient, which is used for preparing many other foods. Furthermore, if the player possesses a Dragon Egg, they can employ a Beast Milk to prepare the Crepe Dough ingredient, which will then become purchasable at Dominique's supply post and can be dismantled for an infinite supply of Dragon Eggs.

Additionally, Zagan drops the Alchemic Bounty shard, which sometimes allows to obtain two and up to four copies of an item when crafting.

For all these reasons, it's worth taking a moment to farm this enemy. A lone Zagan can be found in a small room just before entering the Bridge of Evil, with a Save Room conveniently located a couple of rooms to the left for both resting and saving progress.

Trivia[]

  • Zagan can summon seemingly limitless Light Elementals if the player stands on its back.
  • The design and attack patterns of this enemy are likely based on the Catoblepas from the Castlevania franchise.
