A demon who draws power from coin.
His fortune has waned of late.
~ Description from Ritual of the Night

Valefar or Valefor is a boss in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon. His attacks often consist of gold-related elements.

Origins[]

Valefar (also known as Valefor, Malaphar, Malephar and Valafar) has its origins in the Lesser Key of Solomon where he is a Duke of Hell commanding ten legions of demons. He tempts people to steal and is in charge of a good relationship among thieves. Valefar is considered a good familiar by his associates "till they are caught in the trap".

He is depicted as a lion with the head of a man or as a lion with the head of a donkey.

Appearances[]

Ritual of the Night[]

Valefar has a unique aspect to his boss battle in that once his initial 3,000 HP is depleted, he will perform an unavoidable attack where it takes away all of Miriam's money: this becomes the creature's new HP total for the second stage of the fight. This was initially unlimited but a later patch capped it at 9,999 HP. The money will be returned once the battle concludes, with an amount added which appears to be percentage-based.

If Miriam enters the battle with exactly zero Gold, Valefar will end the stealing animation with a horrified exclamation of "What?! You're flat broke!" and die instantly.

Strategy[]

Valefar room's ceiling is filled with spikes, which can be taken as a hint for the player to equip the Aegis Plate and cast Invert during the boss fight (both which the player must already possess by that point). Once on the ceiling, most of Valefar's attacks will be either very easy to avoid or even become completely useless - plus, Valefar's head will be at the reachable height of most of Miriam's weapons, making it very easy to hit.

Valefar's three two-handed smashes will still be able to reach the player on the ceiling, although just moving out of their way will be enough to evade them (using Accelerator to move away faster greatly helps). Another attack that can reach the player while on the ceiling is when Valefar starts shooting coins from each hand, but these can be easily blocked with the Directed Shield. While on the ceiling, the player will be completely safe of Valefar's casino chip towers smash. However, the player will still be vulnerable to Valefar's absorbing gold attack, as this is unavoidable, but overall, most of the fight will be limited to the player just approaching his head and repeatedly attacking it until the boss is defeated.

Like most of the other bosses, if Valefar is defeated while playing as Miriam without taking any damage, an extra, purely honorary Boss Medal (the Valefar Medal) will be rewarded.

Classic II: Dominique's Curse[]

Valefor[1], or "Valefar" as one of the Liber Logaeth's pages refers him to, is the boss of the Clockwork Nightmare, being one of the Four Dukes of Hell that rules Limbo alongside the Dark Lord Bael, and that Dominique Baldwin must defeat in order to escape the hellish dimension, the other three being Bathin, Focalor, and Gremory. During Valefor's battle, Dominique is suspended on a giant spinning roulette wheel that affects their movements.

Valefor initially attacks by flipping a coin, which upon landing splits into smaller coins that fly in set directions. He repeats this a few times and then leans down to collect more, which gives the player an opportunity to attack his head, the only weak spot. After some time, he will summon a pair of slot machines which are both rigged to display triple sevens. A massive pile of coins then rises from the ground, raising the player with it and giving the player another opportunity to attack Valefor's head. He soon sweeps the gold away, an attack that will harm the player if they are in the way of his hands.

After defeating Valefor, the player gains the Block Breaker, a Passive Shard that makes it possible to break certain blocks by attacking them.

Curse of the Moon[]

A demon who collects human greed, and manifests it as glittering treasure.
Though it may appear to have a human form, it is merely a construct of coins.
The true demon Valefor is the entire vault itself.
When it sustains enough damage, Valefor will lose the ability to command its coins, which will then rain down in its final attack, "El Dorado".

—Official description[2]

Once defeated, Valefor will release Gebel and the illusion behind the piles of gold will disappear. In effect, a room full of skulls is revealed before the player. The skulls are most likely from the greedy humans themselves, although this remains unconfirmed.

Attacks[]

Millionaire

Valefar will attempt to crush the player with a pile of coins from one side of the screen, which is the one they are nearest to, however, the blocks of gold can be destroyed (which will deal minimal damage to Valefar) to shrink the size of the pile and escape or use it to reach Valefar's head. Be forewarned, the pile itself will gradually become taller as well.

Gold Carpet

Valefar will attempt to crush the player with both of his hands, aiming at its position before stopping to attack, which will create a shock wave of coins that the player can use to reach its head.

Live Ingot

Valefar will summon trapped souls of those who drowned in greed in the form of Golden Golems and Golden Mortes (Golden Maniacs in Ultimate/Nightmare Mode). The Golden Golems will appear at the two extremes of the stage and the Golden Morte/Maniac at the middle. Millionaire's pile of gold will instantly kill any summoned enemy upon contact.

El Dorado

Once Valefar is defeated, he will lose his ability to command coins and will rain them down upon the player, gradually brightening the screen in the process.

Strategy[]

Valefar's greatest weakness is his head, which will double any damage received. As such, aerial sub-weapons such as Miriam's Rapier or Zangetsu's Ball-and-chain are highly recommended. Alternatively, the player can use Alfred's Frostcalibur to freeze his head and use Miriam's Axe to deal massive damage since Frostcalibur already doubles damage dealt to bosses, it will quadruple the damage. Using the latter attack will make it possible to finish off Valefar within three hits.

Valefar's most common attack, Millionaire, works heavily against him since it allows the player to reach his head and instantly kills any summoned enemy from Live Ingot.

  • In Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, the player can stand on Valefar's hat and use it as an impromptu platform without taking damage.
  • In Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, Valefor's kamikaze attack "El Dorado" is a direct reference to the legendary city of gold that bears the same name.
  • If Valefor's head is frozen, his facial expressions turns to sadness as opposed to his usual grin.
