A longsword favored by Vikings.

The Ulfberht Sword is a Sword in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Description[]

The Ulfberht Sword is a "slash-motion" weapon with the general-purpose Slash attribute (better against "clothed" and "fleshy" enemies but not as good against "plated" enemies). Its 22 base ATK makes it the direct successor to the Long Sword and its 18 ATK, and it features a longer swing as well, matching the length of most other slash-motion swords and clubs. It is one of the first weapons found by the player that can produce a Technique, Power Slash (↓ ↙ ← → + [Attack], 20 MP); this technique is also on the Morgenstern that can be found a little earlier. Mastering it allows the technique to be used with any standard sword and club weapon.

The earliest point in the game this sword can be found is by having it dropped from the very early Gieremund enemies in the Entrance zone, though it is unlikely you will get it right away because it is at a 1% drop rate. On the other hand, once you have defeated Zangetsu in the upper-right region of the Entrance following your return from your first visit to the Garden of Silence, you can find a "free" Ulfberht Sword in a breakable wall in a room connected to the larger chamber just west of the boss area.

The Ulfberht Sword is an ideal weapon to use against Zangetsu, though, meaning that you may want to craft one yourself even though you will get one as a "reward" for clearing the fight and even though it is technically possible to get one dropped from a generic enemy. The right to craft it is unlocked by collecting Obsidian Equipment/R from a green chest during your short time in the Garden of Silence, and the process involves "upgrading" a Long Sword (dropped by Sabnock at an 8% base rate) using 2 Obsidian (dropped by the same Sabnock at a 5% base rate and found in the Entrance's self-refilling blue chests) and 2 Houndskin (dropped by the aforementioned Gieremunds at a 10% base rate). What may discourage crafting the Ulfberht Sword yourself is that it is not used as a material in any shard enhancements, and players who don't go out of their way to craft this can still fight Zangetsu using the free Morgenstern found in the Garden of Silence (a similar weapon whose 20 base ATK makes it only 2 ATK points behind the Ulfberht Sword).

The Ulfberht Sword is "upgradeable" into the next tier of standard sword, the 29-ATK Harpé. Once you have progressed far enough into the game that you can reach the east end of Garden of Silence, you can detour into the eastern region of Forbidden Underground Waterway and open the green chest containing Steel Equipment/R. This allows you to easily perform the upgrade using just two Steel, which can drop from the Sabnock and Blood Grinder Knight in the Entrance as well as the Buer Armor and especially the Shovel Armors in the area. However, as you progress further into the game, you will encounter Maledictions that drop the Harpé directly (3%); in Hard difficulty, they appear as early as the "Buer chairlift" area in the Waterway that leads back up into the Entrance zone's southeast end.
