The Thorn Whip is a Whip in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
Description[]
The Thorn Whip, featuring 20 base ATK, succeeds the basic 13-ATK Whip as a weapon using the "whip lash" attack motion, which is slightly delayed but hits a fairly large area out in front. Unlike all other whips, which only use the Strike attribute (which is specialized against various plated enemies), this whip strikes with a blend of the Strike and Slash attributes. It is the earliest whip that can produce the Whip weapon class' sole Technique, Critical Swing (↓ ↘ → + Attack, 30 MP); if mastered, it can be used with any whip, including the last whip in the game, the Andromeda.
The Thorn Whip is a very easy weapon to acquire as soon as you establish the hub at Arvantville, even though you will have acquired the basic Whip just a short time earlier while clearing the starting zone, Galleon Minerva. This is because you can get one for "free" by completing Susie Quinn's very first food quest, which is to submit a Rice Ball from your inventory. That can be acquired by first submitting a Tunic to Abigail Cleese for the sake of completing her respective first quest, thus rewarding you with 5 Rice, and then using 1 Rice and 1 Halite (bought for 50G) as ingredients to prepare a Rice Ball. You will end up with a versatile weapon that can carry you into the short, early portion of Garden of Silence, where you can find the Morgenstern in a chest; this club features the exact same 20 ATK and Slash and Strike attributes but carries out as a more immediate and direct sword-slash motion.
Given how a Thorn Whip is practically given to you by interacting with the game's quest systems for the first time, there should be no reason to have to craft a Thorn Whip yourself because it can neither be "upgraded" into another whip nor used as a material for increasing a shard's rank. It would take a fair amount of early materials to craft as well: 3 Houndskins, which are dropped by the Gieremunds at the Entrance (10%); 4 Bat Fangs, which are dropped by the very common Bats in the Entrance and other zones (5%); and 2 Lion Manes, which are dropped by the Sabnock in the Entrance (12%).
