The Tunnels is a secret location in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night first included in Update v.1.4. It is an area that makes reference to the 2012 video game Journey, developed by thatgamecompany and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Unlike 8-bit Nightmare, only Miriam is able to access the Tunnels.
Overview[]
The Tunnels become accessible after reaching the Den of Behemoths; upon doing so a special marker will appear on the castle map, on the first floor of the elevator room in the Hidden Desert. By returning to the Hidden Desert and riding up the elevator before the Alfred boss room one floor, the stone slab above the door will now be glowing white and can be interacted with.
The Tunnels are a series of ruins of great proportions, some carved with runes, hinting on having belonged to an ancient civilization of giants. Structures –including their corridors and building materials– have gigantic proportions as well, and many empty spaces can be found toward the top of its rooms, so usage of the High Jump and/or Invert shards is really useful for exploration. There are also a few narrow slits that can be found on some walls –some which have reflective panels along them– where usage of the Reflector Ray is required; these paths often lead to treasure chests or can be used as shortcuts to the other side of those walls.
The area contains all forms of Elementals, Dullahammers with much higher stats, and Giant Dullahammer Heads. There are several reappearing chests with end game materials or Gold in them.
The stage ends with a boss fight against a mechanized dragon called the Guardian; a fight centered around staying out of its line of sight. Upon defeating the boss, the player is awarded with a Mystical Scarf. The scarf, when worn, changes the BGM of the Hidden Desert and points out secrets by a glowing white pulse.
