Tartarus is a location in Classic II: Dominique's Curse. It is a cemetery located at the lower-right edge of Limbo, beyond the Infernal Fortress.

Description[]

During the New Moon, the enemies in Tartarus include Mortes (both fast and slow variants) and Gieremunds. These are replaced with Silver Wolfmen during the Dead Moon.

Tartarus becomes important at two points in the story. Firstly, at the far edge of the cemetery lies the tomb of the demon Royal Chef. Crouching at his grave for a few seconds will summon a lightning strike that reveals a staircase down to his crypt, which contains a serving of Omurice. Dominique must then bring the Omurice to the Merchant in Paulina, who will offer to sell her the True Sight in gratitude. The True Sight is in turn needed to reveal the sandy Megiddo Wastes as the watery Megiddo Depths.

Later on, after acquiring the Devil's Ring in the Cocytus Ridge, Dominique can crouch at an elaborate grave near the middle point of Tartarus to summon the Revenant through a portal. After defeating the Revenant, Dominique gains the Ruinous Rood and the Revenant relocates to Paulina, where he will give her Coins in exchange for demon Remains. Defeating the Revenant is not necessary to finish the game, but it is a condition for the true (good) ending.

Trivia[]

  • In Greek mythology, Tartarus is a place in the underworld where wicked souls are punished and the Titans are imprisoned. Tartarus was believed to lie at the bottom of the underworld, far below the divisions of Hades where most souls would arrive after death.
