Speed Run Mode is an Extra Mode featured in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night where the game is intended to be completed in the shortest time possible.
Description[]
Speed Run Mode intends for the player to complete the game's main story in the shortest time possible. A blue timer appears at the bottom-left corner of the screen during gameplay to keep track of how much time has elapsed, and another timer colored in yellow shows the Best Time recorded to help the player see the target time to beat (this time is initially taken from the best recorded time when completing the main story).
A temporary save data is created every time the screen transitions, and the player can also create a Temporary Save on demand (a quicksave of sorts). These save files can be loaded at any time during gameplay, allowing the player to try the current section as many times as desired until they achieve a satisfactory short time. These data files are automatically deleted when returning to the game's Title Screen.
All cutscenes will still play during this mode and the timer will keep on running while doing so, so the player is advised to skip them as quickly as possible in order to not waste any time. The only exception is at the beginning of the game, during the introductory cutscene, where the timer won't start running until the player performs their first action (prompted by a "Press Any Key" message).
Most animations that briefly stop the game are removed in this mode. Area title introductions, leveling up, absorbing new Shards, collecting HP Max Ups, MP Max Ups or Capacity upgrades, won't briefly stop the game like they do during normal play; again, this is to avoid unnecessarily wasting any time and keep the fluidity of the game.
The timer will keep on running while in the Main Menu, as well as when reading books from bookcases. Likewise, it will keep on running during interactions with NPCs, whether it is while doing business with Dominique or Johannes, or when talking to other villagers. As such, the player is expected to develop enough skill to make any transactions as quickly as possible in order to not waste more time than that strictly necessary (if playing on PC, the timer can be stopped by pressing ALT + TAB to return to the Desktop).
A list of varied achievements are recorded when the player reaches certain points of the game (e.g.: meeting Gebel for the first time, defeating Vepar, etc.). These can be consulted in the Archives menu, where a new entry named "Speed Run Data" will appear which displays a list of all records achieved by the player.
