A defender of the castle whose shield is among the demon realm's finest.
~ In-game description

The Shield Outsider is a recurring enemy in the Bloodstained series.

Appearances[]

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon[]

First introduced in the second stage, Shield Outsiders are the same size as the characters, and are armed with shields that cover their frontal areas. This variant of the Shield Outsider will walk back and forth. Fortunately, the shield does not defend against the character's main melee attacks.

A variant of this Outsider can be found armed with a spear, and they will thrust the weapon at the player when they stop moving.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night[]

In this game, the Shield Outsider is now bigger than Miriam, along with having a very dangerous rotary blade installed on his shield. The Shield Outsider attacks by revving up the blade on the shield and attempting to damage Miriam with it by performing short forward charges. The shield will defend against any and all attacks directed to the front of the Outsider, but by doing so, it will also leave his back exposed to attacks; as such, a basic strategy to defeat him is to jump over him and attack him from behind.

Defeating five Shield Outsiders is required to complete Lindsay's "Avenge the death of Edward!" quest, which awards Silver ×3 upon completion. An easy-to-farm Shield Outsider can be found in the room preceding Valac's boss room in the Towers of Twin Dragons, which, apart from spawning near the room's entrance, is also very near to that area's Save Room.

He drops the valuable Directed Shield shard, a Directional Shard that allows Miriam to call forth an impenetrable shield that can be aimed in any direction and that can block even the strongest attacks. The size of this shield can be increased by enhancing the shard, granting it more coverage.

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2[]

Instead of moving, the Shield Outsider will stand idly with his shield at the front, which can defend against non-piercing weaponry. Upon the player getting close, the Shield Outsider will raise his shield and smash it onto the ground, creating a short-ranged shockwave.

A golden variant of the Shield Outsider can be found in the final level in the last episode of the game, where unlike his weaker variants, he will actively back away from the player to prevent them from damaging him if there's enough room behind him.
