The Sheol Foothills is a location in Classic II: Dominique's Curse. It is reached by going left from the starting town of Goetia and provides access to the Plain of Burning Sand. It is much more dangerous than the Asphodel Steppe on the opposite side and will ultimately lead to a dead end without the True Sight. For these reasons, it is best avoided until later by someone starting a new game.
Overview[]
The road through this area begins relatively flat, though there are bottomless pits in the way and a choice between higher and lower ground to walk on. An unidentified building can be seen far away in the background, but a matter of greater concern are the enemies that are quick to attack Dominique in different ways. During both of the Moon's phases, these include Archdemons, Bats, and Cannon Mortes. During the New Moon, Celaenos also fly in to drop Simians; the Dead Moon removes the Celaenos and Simians but adds Bone Mortes and more Bats.
The initial enemy gauntlet is followed by an ascent of a foothill. More Cannon Mortes are present here and are accompanied by Bone Mortes during the New Moon but Archdemons during the Dead Moon. These enemies can be avoided altogether by going through an artificial tower on the right. Besides being a safer route, the tower contains an Ether inside a chest, but it can only be entered and exited by shattering walls with the Block Breaker.
After this, the terrain becomes progressively more natural and mountainous, with several turns upward and downward, some of which are made possible through staircases and moving platforms. The way to the top is mostly flanked by Bats but also introduces the Wall Dragon enemy, which will become common later on.
Trivia[]
- This area is named after Sheol, the common afterlife in Judaism. Sheol is described in the Hebrew Bible as a dark and gloomy place in the underworld.
- The Asphodel Steppe on the opposite side of Goetia is named after a similar concept of the afterlife, namely the Asphodel Fields in Greek mythology.
