At the River of Woe, the moon governs more than just demon behavior.
~ Ninja in Notoria

The River of Woe is a location in Classic II: Dominique's Curse. It follows a river that flows from Lake Acheron in the west to the Central Well in the east.

Overview[]

The dry path along the River of Woe consists of rock topped by wooden architecture, including buildings in the background and on Limbo's world map, with a Japanesque aesthetic. During the New Moon, the enemies above the water include Ninjas, Titanias, a Silver Wolfman, and Seamas, the latter of which jump up from the water. The Dead Moon removes the Titanias and the Silver Wolfman but adds Wisps and Dullahammers. Unlike those that live in Almadel and Notoria, the Ninjas here are hostile to Dominique regardless of the Moon's current phase.

The river itself can be explored with the Deep Sinker by diving into two places that are isolated in gameplay. The first of these underwater sections features platforms and swimming Deeseamas, which are present in the water during both the New Moon and the Dead Moon. A wall on the right here can be broken with the Block Breaker to reveal an Ectoplasm. The second underwater section is smaller and free of enemies but contains a Horus Eye inside a chest.

Above the second underwater section, there is a torii gate with a portal that leads to different places depending on the Moon's current phase.

During the New Moon, the portal in the torii leads to a small and dry room with a field Merchant who sells Dominique the Va Ischa in exchange for her Dagger. After, the purchase has been made, it is possible to buy the Dagger back from this Merchant without giving up the Va Ischa.

During the Dead Moon, the portal instead leads to some platforms above a bottomless pit and below water that is somehow suspended in the air. The water continues to the left through a submerged corridor, where Deeseamas and Ninjas are present as a hindrance. This underwater corridor ultimately leads to a dry room with wooden walls and stone statues in the background. Here, Dominique faces an unusually powerful Killer Barber: the Hunter Barber. Upon defeat, the Hunter Barber will relinquish a chest that contains the Dive Kick skill. He then relocates to the town of Notoria, where he will give Dominique Coins in exchange for demon Remains.

Inside both parts of the River of Woe that are reachable through the torii portal, the timer pauses for the Moon cycle.

Trivia[]

  • In Greek mythology, the river Acheron is believed to flow into the underworld and is sometimes known epithetically as the "river of woe". Dominique's Curse instead uses the name Acheron for a lake west of the River of Woe.
