Travel along a ray of light. You can reflect off walls to reach new areas.

Reflector Ray is a Directional Shard in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Description[]

Reflector Ray causes a laser-like beam to emanate from Miriam's hand as the player holds the aim control for Directional Shards; on pressing the Fire button, she will turn into a ball of light, zip to the end of the beam and reappear. The beam will deflect off surfaces, and allows passage into any area it fits into (that is, Miriam's character model does not have to fit for her to pass through). This allows access to a number of areas protected by narrow openings too high for Miriam to slide through. It can be used in the air, but the beam takes time to extend, so it is only possible to travel a very short distance this way.

Prior to acquiring Invert and High Jump, it is the main method for traversing large vertical spaces. Mirror panels located on walls in some areas serve to enhance the range of Reflector Ray, allowing it to move Miriam far further in certain places than she could using the Shard alone. If the player is skilled, it is possible to execute a Double Jump at the instant Miriam exits the effect of Reflector Ray; while this does not gain much additional height, many times it is enough to reach certain high ledges (often containing loot).

Reflector Ray does not function in the exterior areas of the Towers of Twin Dragons or any other area with a similar pseudo-3D effect; no beam will extend from Miriam's hand in these areas. It also cannot be used underwater unless Deep Sinker is active.

Since it is taken away in New Game Plus, it is not possible to improve the Reflector Ray's Grade. Improving its Rank will increase the length of the beam and the distance that can be traveled. All Ranks require the same material, Bovine Plumes, which can be collected from the cow-demon Haagenti in the Oriental Sorcery Lab. Since these can also be used to make the much more useful High Jump Skill Shard, it is not a particularly good idea to power up Reflector Ray unless the player has a surplus of Bovine Plumes. It is worth mentioning that at a higher Rank the beam will take a longer time to appear, since it needs to draw a longer beam at the same speed, which may end up challenging the player's patience on its frequent usage.

However, Reflector Ray's Rank is not reduced to 1 in New Game Plus and will remain at the Rank it was before when the player finished their previous playthrough. This gives some scope for sequence breaking; in particular, it is possible to go through the Inferno Cave in the opposite direction by using a maxed-out Reflector Ray and a very quick double-jump-to-Accelerator, allowing Miriam to acquire Invert early.

Availability[]

As with all progression-related Shards, it is removed from the player's inventory in New Game Plus.
