Phlegethon is a location in Classic II: Dominique's Curse. It is a open-air volcanic area that connects the ruined town of Lemegeton to the Furnace of Dis.

Overview[]

The trek through this area begins on solid ground just to the west of Lemegeton (or to the left of the town from a gameplay perspective). However, someone without proper equipment will soon come to a dead end in a sea of lava that instantly kills Dominique.

The road continues on natural platforms above the lava, which can only be reached by creating platforms using the Summon Circle skill acquired in the Avernus Grove. The climb upward from there involves careful platforming (including more use of Summon Circle) and the climbing of staircases between two rock walls. After this ascent, the path continues left on some platforms high above the lava, until it finally leads to the entrance to the Gremory's dungeon: the Furnace of Dis.

During the New Moon, the enemies in this area include a Hellhound, Zepars, Wall Dragons, and in the upper-left section, Titanias. The Dead Moon adds Wisps around the area, moves one Wall Dragon to the opposite wall, and adds a second Hellhound in the upper parts of the area. The Groundskeeper associated with the Furnace of Dis patrols the heights of Phlegethon during the New Moon, but he moves into the dungeon itself during the Dead Moon.

Trivia[]

  • In Greek mythology, Phlegethon is one of the rivers of the underworld. It is considered the "river of fire" and is even described as a literal stream of that element in some works. The other four rivers of the Greek underworld provide the names for the Stygian Marsh, the Lethe Cavern, the Cocytus Ridge, and Lake Acheron.
