The Morgenstern is a Club in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
Description[]
The Morgenstern, featuring 20 base ATK, is a "traditional sword swing" weapon that, like the 15-ATK Mace that can be crafted shortly beforehand, is considered a "club" instead of a "sword" because of its anti-armor Strike attribute. Unlike most other clubs, it adds the Slash attribute featured on swords, and the only other club that does so is the 30-ATK Macuahuitl that is set up as the next tier of club. Surprisingly, it can produce the Power Slash technique (↓ ↙ ← → + Attack, 20 MP) despite the Morgenstern not being one of the weapons listed in the in-game bookcase introducing it, which is likely a development oversight. Mastering it allows the technique to be used with any standard sword and club weapon.
A Morgenstern can be found easily by opening a green chest at a dead-end in the western portion of Garden of Silence, giving you a solid all-around weapon during your short time in the Garden fairly early in the game. Both its ATK stat and its Strike and Slash attributes are identical to the Thorn Whip that can easily be awarded by an introductory quest at Arvantville, but it is arguably an improvement because the traditional sword swing motion used by the Morgenstern comes out more quickly and with less of a forced delay than a whip-swinging motion. It is a solid weapon to use against Zangetsu in his boss fight coming up shortly in the eastern portion of the Entrance, though if you want a little more damage against him with every attack you land, you can get an Ulfberht Sword either by having it drop from a Gieremund (1%) or by "upgrading" a Long Sword using Obsidian, Houndskin, and the Obsidian Equipment/R recipe book.
Obsidian Equipment/R incidentally allows for you to craft a Morgenstern of your own, taking 1 Obsidian (dropped by Sabnock at a 5% base rate), 2 Iron (dropped by Blood Grinder Knight at a 10% base rate), and 2 Elm (dropped by the Cannon Mortes in Galleon Minerva at a 4% base rate). All three materials are randomly found in the self-refilling blue chests in the Entrance zone. There is little reason to do this because the only way to use up a Morgenstern as a material is by "upgrading" it into a Honebami katana after having found Steel Equipment/R in the earlier, eastern region of Forbidden Underground Waterway, and a "free" Honebami can be found during the train ride sequence in Bridge of Evil much later in the game. The upgrade requires 1 Steel (dropped by the aforementioned Blood Grinder Knight and Sabnock, as well as Buer Armor and Shovel Armor) and 1 Damascus (dropped by Lance Armor and Axe Outsider). Note that the Honebami can be further upgraded into a Gondo-Shizunori spear, which itself can be upgraded into a Leng Yan Ju spear.
