- A giant flame demon that dwells in a volcano.
It travels through the ground with its red-hot, chain-like body and traps its prey with spouts of flame.
Its body is made up of the corpses of those fallen in the volcano, consumed with a hateful grudge against the living.

—Official description[1]
The Lavamandra is described as a giant flame demon with a hot chain-like serpentine body made up of corpses of those who died in the volcano where it lives, which are consumed by hate-filled spite toward the living. It swims through the ground and traps its prey with spouts of fire spewed from its mouth.
During the boss fight, the Lavamandra mainly attacks by leaping from the floor to the ceiling, wildly scattering rocks and lava as it does so. It can also attack by spitting barrages of fire across much of the screen and having rocks drop from the ceiling. Sometimes, it'll raise its tail out of the lava, turning its tip into a three-pronged trident-like feature that shoots a few waves of three energy balls. While it does this, it can also open its head up like a flower and try to bite the player's character by clamping it down. After a few more shots, it'll open its head up again and lunge it at the player character before retracting its tail back into the lava.
Its weak spot is its head, and during its fire breath attack, the player character can quickly move to the platform where its head will emerge next to, allowing them to get in several free hits before it submerges again.
The Lavamandra's final desperation attack involves it obscuring the left and right platforms with segments of its body, and when the screen starts to shake, that's the player's cue to quickly jump to either platform as its head, opened like a flower once again, lifts the center one into the air and swallows it before it loses its heat and sinks back into the lava for good.
