The HP Max Up is a recurring upgrade item in the Bloodstained series. It increases the maximum HP of a character and also completely restores their HP meter upon pickup. Unlike most other items, HP Max Up upgrades aren't collected in the player's inventory to be later used on demand and are instead automatically applied on pickup.
Description[]
The HP Max Up upgrade comes in the form of a golden grail containing what appears to be a red orb inside. When one is picked up, the player character's maximum Hit Points increase by +20 HP and also all their HP meter is instantly fully restored. These items are not collected into the player's inventory to be consumed later, but are instead auto-applied when picked up. They sometimes can be found on the field in the open, but most of the times are found either hidden behind breakable walls, inside of secret rooms, or in areas that take an alternate route to reach or a special action taken by the player to access.
In Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, picking up an HP Max Up upgrade increases the MAXHP stat of the playable character by +20 HP. There are a total of 31 HP Max Up items to be found in the game, for a potential attainable total of +620 extra HP.
In Classic II: Dominique's Curse, the HP Max Up is replaced by the Nectar, which acts in the same way.
Availability[]
Ritual of the Night[]
Galleon Minerva[]
- Near the beginning of the game, once reaching the deck of the ship for the first time, jump on the hanging piece of mast above, head left and jump on the high ledge on the left to enter a previously inaccessible room. Head all the way left and break the wall at the end (behind the green chest containing the Country Dress) to uncover the HP Max Up.
Arvantville[]
- Head all the way to the right of this area; at the entrance that gives access to the Hellhold, flick the lever to lower the drawbridge; now, flick the lever again and quickly step on the tip of the drawbridge as it rises, and near the top jump toward the right to land on an offscreen ledge and pick up both an HP Max Up and an MP Max Up.
Entrance[]
- Past Zangetsu's boss room. The HP Max Up is lying on the high ledge on the left, in front of the exit to the next room.
- From the first Save Room of the Dian Cécht Cathedral, head all the way up and then left past the Cyhyraeth; keep heading all the way left (jumping over the pit along the way) until reaching a small room; the HP Max Up is lying right in front of a Shard Stand holding a Shortcut shard (likely the second one obtained in the game).
- From the room with the blood fountain, go through the upper-right exit; past a couple of rooms, in the one with the Gieremund at ground level, the HP Max Up can be seen in the lower-right corner behind a closed door. It can only be reached much later in the game by coming from the other way from the Forbidden Underground Waterway (which also allows to flick the lever to open the shortcut door).
Garden of Silence[]
- In the room that is left of the horizontal room with the red sky and moon (later revealed to be Gremory and that houses the entrance to the Den of Behemoths) and which has two Moco Weeds, drop down through the thin platform; the HP Max Up is sitting just to the left.
- From the Warp Room of this area and the Hatchet Heel bookcase (and the same large room where Miriam rides the coach over the big chasm), jump upward along the series of platforms near the right edge of the room; the HP Max Up is lying on the ledge on the right.
- On top of the big pavilion housing the piano at the center of the garden.
Dian Cécht Cathedral[]
- In the room straight past the Craftwork boss room; the HP Max Up is sitting right in front of the green chest that contains the Unicorn Ring.
There are four towers that comprise the upper section of this area (easily identifiable on the map and usually reached after obtaining the Reflector Ray or the Double Jump). The following instructions refer to them counting from left to right; that is, the "first tower" is the leftmost one, the "second tower" is the one right of it, the "third tower" is the following one, and the "fourth tower" is the rightmost one.
- In the first tower, jump inside the large bell from below to pick up an unseen HP Max Up.
- In the open air corridor that connects the first tower with the second tower, hit the roof at the center to destroy it - the HP Max Up is sitting on the right ledge.
- In the second tower, the HP Max Up is sitting on top of a central wood support that is above the first large bell.
- In the third tower, destroy the wall that is between both the bottom and top exits on the right to uncover the HP Max Up.
- In the third tower, enter the large bell that is near the top from below (Invert or High Jump required).
- In the third tower, near the top-right corner, above and to the left of the door to the Hall of Termination. The HP Max Up and the door are initially behind a closed door, though, so the player will have to come from the Hall of Termination side to reach the upgrade.
Livre Ex Machina[]
- In the long horizontal room with three Poltergeists, a Carriage Morte and a Demon (found shortly after the rotating bookcase that gives access to the secret room with the Crow Mask), break the right wall to reveal the HP Max Up.
- From the Warp Room, head right (passing through the small labyrinth using Reflector Ray), then up one room, and then all the way left, carefully traversing the long horizontal room with rotating spikes on both the floor and ceiling. In the next room, head down, avoiding the moving saw blades, and quickly use Reflector Ray to fit into the small enclosed alcove on the right with the HP Max Up inside.
Towers of Twin Dragons[]
- While climbing up the exterior of the west tower, once reaching the door that gives access inside the tower, turn around and jump on the series of rotating gears on the left while heading in a general leftward direction. Keep heading left along the segments of coiled pathway, gaps, and other rotating gears until reaching the end of this path, where the HP Max Up is sitting at (it is above the green chest containing the Flying Edge sword).
- While climbing up the top exterior section of the west tower (reachable after obtaining the Double Jump), when nearing the top, head all the way toward the left to eventually reach a series of large gears; jump onto the gears and travel toward the right (also jumping along a series of collapsing platforms along the way) to reach the door that gives access into the tower. Don't go inside yet and instead head left a little (past a Buer Armor) and drop down the ledge through a collapsing platform onto more rotating gears below; head right until reaching a piece of floor that is just below the path with the tower's entrance and that is guarded by a Wolfman; the HP Max Up is at the end of this path.
Bridge of Evil[]
- In the passenger car of the train (where Zangetsu helps Miriam to get to the roof), climb on its roof and then jump-kick on Bu-chan[1] or Buer to climb on the offscreen roof of the large car on the left to find both an HP Max Up and an MP Max Up. Alternatively, during a following visit to this area, use either Reflector Ray, Invert or High Jump at this location to reach the roof of the left car.
- After getting down the train, from the Save Room, climb down a couple of floors and hit the (high) right wall to destroy it and uncover the HP Max Up.
Underground Sorcery Lab[]
- In the room prior to Bathin's boss room, jump-kick on Bu-chan[1] or Buer to reach the top-right corner exit (alternatively, after defeating Bathin and having obtained the Reflector Ray shard, aim the Reflector Ray toward the upper-right corner, activate it, and press Jump the moment Miriam exits the beam to perform an extra midair jump and reach the ledge). In the next room with the Macaron, hit the (high) right wall to destroy it and uncover a secret room; the HP Max Up is inside this room along with a Shard Stand containing a Shortcut shard.
- In the final room of this area (which also connects to a Warp Room), the HP Max Up can be found on the bottom-left corner (just in front of a piece of destroyable floor that gives access to a secret room below containing the Skull Necklace and an MP Max Up).
Forbidden Underground Waterway[]
- In the room that is below the right Save Room and Crimson Storm bookcase (coming from the well in the Garden of Silence).
- At the central large room, take the top-right exit; the HP Max Up is at the end of the next room.
- From the left Warp Room of this area, head left past the long horizontal room to reach a large flooded room with a couple of Deeseamas and a Glashtyn. Destroy the wall on the bottom-right corner (Deep Sinker or Aqua Stream required) to reveal the entrance to a secret room containing another Glashtyn inside, a red treasure chest, and the HP Max Up.
Hidden Desert[]
- In the room with the falling sand that also has a green chest with the Potent Ammunition/R. To enter this room from the room below, aim the Reflector Ray upward through the falling sand, activate it, and jump at the precise moment Miriam exits the beam to perform an extra midair jump and this way reach the room with the treasures above. Alternatively, jump kick on Bu-chan[1] or Buer through the falling sand to also reach the room above.
- From the Warp Room, take the bottom-right exit of the next room, and then the left exit of the next room. In the next (large) room, allow Miriam to be sucked down the sandfall trap; the HP Max Up is sitting on the bottom-right corner.
Hall of Termination[]
- From the vertical room that connects to the Save Room and the Warp Room of this area (and that is prior the large staircase that leads to Gebel's boss room), climb all the way to the top and destroy the ceiling to reveal the entrance to a secret room above with many treasures, including both an HP Max Up and an MP Max Up (destroying the left wall also uncovers another secret room that houses the access to the 8-bit Nightmare stage).
Den of Behemoths[]
- In the first very large room (below the initial floor where the player enters the level), on a ledge a bit to the left of the top-right corner.
- In the next room after the Valefar boss room, the HP Max Up sits on a ledge just above the entrance.
