The hardy shell of a monster.

The Grotesque Shell is a Material in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Description[]

Owing to how tricky it is to get Scythe Mites to appear in specific areas in the western half of the Towers of Twin Dragons, players will typically find themselves collecting the occasional Grotesque Shell from the Mimic that first appears in upper Livre Ex Machina. However, the Scythe Mite is an earlier source of Grotesque Shells, and the material's first relevant function is to advance through the first three ranks of the Summon Insect conjure shard that the Scythe Mite also drops. Adding ranks to it will cause its rising arc attack to potentially be repeated for a second or third time.

When you start exploring Livre Ex Machina, the Hall of Termination is not far behind, and there you can find both a free (albeit tricky-to-reach) Blutgang sword and the recipe book that allows you to craft more of it, Fine Equipment/R. Blutgang happens to be the material used up to elevate the Sword Expertise shard (dropped by the early Sabnock) to Ranks 5, 6, and 7; Sword Expertise is an important shard to enhance all the way to Rank 9 because of how much more damage you can expect to deal with swords and clubs while having its skill shard clone in your collection. However, because one of its other materials is the Crystal, the Dáinsleifs needed for the final two ranks depend on finding Gold materials, and both Crystals and Gold materials are mainly acquired in blue chests in Hidden Desert, you will largely want to hold off on crafting more Blutgangs of your own until that point. When that time arrives, you will need a Grotesque Shell for each Blutgang you plan to craft.

A third, albeit more dubious, use for the Grotesque Shell is the creation of the Fangshi Scarf, which has a niche in that it offers a fair MND increase (as well as Light resistance) before you can craft the all-purpose Over the Rainbow at the end of the game. Its other ingredients are an easy-to-find Wool (dropped by the Wolfman in the Towers of Twin Dragons and the Allocer in the Hidden Desert) and a Vespine Wing (dropped by the Titania in the Hall of Termination), and its required recipe book, Very Fine Equipment/R, can be gotten by a Double Jump dive-kick-based sequence break. However, a "free" Fangshi Scarf can be gotten even earlier by completing Susie's fourteenth food quest, and there is no point in owning more than one Fangshi Scarf.
