Bloodstained Wiki

A demoness of half-human, half-beast form.
She presides over the moon.
~ Description from Ritual of the Night

Gremory is a recurring major antagonist in the Bloodstained series.

She was voiced by Kari Wahlgren in the English version of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and by Saori Gotō in the Japanese version.[1][2]

Origins[]

Gremory (also known as Gemory, Gomory, Gemon, or Gaeneron) has her origins in the medieval grimoires. The name is possibly derived from Gimon, one of the angels of "the ninth month, which is called Kislev", from the Liber Juratus Honorii or The Sworne Booke of Honorius (dated from 13th century or earlier).

In the Lesser Key of Solomon, where she is referred to as male, she is described as a beautiful woman with a duchess' coronet tied about her middle and said to be riding on a great camel. This description appears to be tied to the images of celestial bodies, to which the summoning of spirits were linked, although how exactly is unclear. The rest of the description reads as follows: "His office is to tell of all things past, present, and to come; and of treasures hid, and what they lie in; and to procure the love of women both young and old. He governeth 26 legions of spirits."

Description[]

Official description by Koji Igarashi:

The 56th demon in Solomon's grimoire. A demon with the status of a duke, also known as the goddess of the moon. Summoned by Gebel, this demon oversees one portion of the castle. She is capable of creating portals into different dimensions; once there, she can harness the power of the moon and use it to attack her enemies, firing endless crescent moon knives at her opponents. She also has a devastating gravity attack that's generated by power of the lacquer-black moon.[3]

Gremory resembles a woman with the upper half of a human, and lower half of a camel, with the head of a camel jutting from the mid section of her body. She has eight arms, each of them embedded with a golden ring. She wears a large crown in a similar fashion to a belt, with golden chains piercing through the camel head's eyes. She also wears a white cloth to cover her chest and a white veil that covers her head, down to her eyes. Additionally, there's also an object similar to a large ring on her back, which projects the shape of a crescent moon.

Appearances[]

Ritual of the Night[]

One of the 72 demons of Solomon. She never leaves Gebel undefended.
~ Terms description

Gremory is a very powerful demon who manipulates many of the events that occur in Ritual of the Night, alongside Dominique, both scheming to summon Bael. She acts as Gebel's second in command visibly, while in truth corrupting and controlling him to serve her own ends, forcing him to use the Liber Logaeth to summon the Hellhold, a demonic castle filled to the brim with demons, in the human world, causing the nearby village of Arvantville to be devastated. She is the reason for the game's bad endings, as unless her control over him is revealed and severed, she will still be working in the shadows with Miriam unaware. In the second bad ending, she moves on to possess Miriam as well.

However, Zangetsu's sword is her weakness, and if it is used on the red moon that appears when battling Gebel, Gremory will be revealed and her hold on Gebel broken. A second red moon is also her in disguise, and slashing that opens the way to the Den of Behemoths. After that she faces Miriam in the Glacial Tomb, attempting to stop her from reaching Dominique. There she is defeated, though she manages to escape once again through a portal, not appearing at all afterward.

Like most of the other bosses, if Gremory is defeated without taking any damage, an extra, purely honorary Boss Medal (the Gremory Medal) will be rewarded.

Gremory is also playable in Boss Revenge Mode along with Andrealphus, Bathin, and Bloodless. There, they confront Zangetsu, Dominique Baldwin, and Miriam to exact vengeance on their defeat in the main game. She is still weak to the Zangetsuto in this mode, meaning the battle with Zangetsu is more dangerous for her than the other characters. The moon atop her head reflects her remaining MP through its phase (with a full moon indicating full MP) and changes color to a blood moon when her HP is critically low.

Classic Mode[]

Gremory is the boss of the first segment of Stage 5, making her the last boss before the confrontation with Gebel. She flies around the arena and mostly attacks by forming moon blades. She can also make surfaces hazardous through the Innes attack.

Dominique's Curse[]

Gremory is one of the four Dukes of Hell. She rules the dimension of Limbo with an iron fist alongside the other three Dukes, Bathin, Valefar, and Focalor, while serving the Dark Lord Bael. In order to escape, Dominique Baldwin must defeat Gremory in her Fortress, the Furnace of Dis, which is implied to be her torture dungeon.[4] She fights similarly to her Classic Mode incarnation, but with a few more abilities including teleportation and the scissor-like Eratosthenes attack. After defeating her, Dominique gains the Dimension Shift skill.

Curse of the Moon[]

Gremory serves as the main antagonist and final boss of the game's first chapter. Although she is not initially seen or mentioned, her presence is hinted at by the moon in the background of each stage, which starts a new moon but changes in phase as Zangetsu's adventure continues. Gremory hinders Zangetsu's party on their way through indirect methods, such as dispatching Andrealphus to ambush them on the ship that leads to the Hellhold castle.[5]

The party ultimately reaches the Hellhold's top floor and finds Gremory inside a stained glass window, which she emerges from. After taking enough damage in the ensuing battle, Gremory flies away and the floor rises until Zangetsu and his allies (if any) find themselves outdoors at the top of a tower. Gremory flies to the now-full moon in the background, fuses it with her head, and unfurls her wings, commencing the last phase of her battle. Her fate after her defeat depends on Zangetsu's earlier actions:

  • If Zangetsu recruited all three possible allies (Miriam, Alfred, and Gebel), Gremory prepares a ball of dark matter in a last-ditch attempt to kill the heroes, but Zangetsu notices and attempts to block the attack. He succeeds in protecting his allies but is corrupted in the process. This leads to Nightmare Mode.
  • If Zangetsu killed all three allies, he gathers energy from Gremory's own attack and uses it to cut her in half. The castle begins to collapse and Zangetsu sees a ball of dark matter, which he claims as a new power. The darkness engulfs him and he becomes a lonely dark emperor.
  • If Zangetsu ignored all three allies, he cuts Gremory in half, but she reforms herself and prepares a similar last-ditch attack to what she would use against the party of four. Miriam, Alfred, and Gebel suddenly appear behind Zangetsu and throw themselves at the attack in an attempt to protect him. The three die and Zangetsu escapes. In the aftermath, Zangetsu realizes that this world and those in it have been crafted by Gremory and shown to him alone by the Curse of the Moon.
  • If Zangetsu killed at least one ally and ignored the other two, he cuts Gremory in half and unceremoniously leaves the castle. In the aftermath, he feels as if the Gremory he felled had been little more than a shadow.
  • If Zangetsu recruited at least one ally but not all three, Gremory is defeated without being cut in half and without attempting a last-ditch attack. In the aftermath, Zangetsu's ally or allies go their own ways, but Zangetsu feels as if the Gremory they felled had been little more than a shadow.

Curse of the Moon 2[]

Gremory is the boss of Stage 7 in all chapters. After the party reaches the highest point of the stage, she shows herself as a silhouette in front of a blood-red moon and descends into the arena. She fights similarly to her first phase in Curse of the Moon, which includes the summoning of insects that are otherwise absent from this stage. When her health is critically low, she retreats in the background, grabs the blood moon and drops it onto the party, burning away both the moon and herself in the process.

Attacks[]

Ritual of the Night[]

As a boss[]

  • Moon Etude: Gremory fires out moon-shaped blades that fly at Miriam. These appear periodically, regardless of what Gremory is doing.
  • Moon Waltz: Gremory fires more moon-like blades, this time red ones that home in on you more quickly and in greater numbers. This is an actual attack, unlike Moon Etrude.
  • Curse Order: Gremory fires out a wave of several homing purple spirits, which can inflict the Curse status.
  • Innes: Gremory sticks her hands in portals, making them appear on the ground and chase Miriam. If they touch her, she will take constant damage as long as she is in contact. They do not cause her to flinch.
  • Abenzera: Once in her second phase, Gremory will fire out two large lasers in opposite directions, both circling the arena.
  • Eratosthenes: Gremory pulls out a giant pair of scissors and swings at Miriam quickly.

Boss Revenge Mode[]

  • Moon Etrude: Gremory creates up to four moon blades, which fly at her enemy after a moment. MP cost: 9
  • Moon Waltz: Gremory fires a single red moon blade, which automatically targets the enemy. It hovers in place at the end of it's arc, before flying back to her. Only one can be out at once. MP Cost: 13
  • Abenzera: Gremory creates a circular wave of energy around herself as a shield, dealing damage if enemies touch it. MP Cost: 44
  • Curse Order: Gremory fires out a burst of spinning purple spirits, which can inflict the Curse status. MP Cost: 33
  • Eratosthenes: Gremory pulls out a giant pair of scissors and strikes either left or right depending on your direction. MP Cost: 66
  • Innes: Gremory sticks her hands in portals, making them appear on the ground and follow her enemy. They deal constant damage on contact and recover her MP. MP Cost: 1
  • Dimension Shift: Gremory teleports to the left or right for a quick escape from attacks. MP Cost: 5
  • Curse of the Moon: Can only be used at critical health, and only once per battle. Gremory drops the Moon on her enemy, dealing massive damage and forcing them out of its area of effect, dealing constant damage until they are pushed out.

Strategy[]

Ritual of the Night[]

Gremory is especially weak against the Zangetsuto and it will always deal Critical Hits to her, so it is advisable to craft the Katana Expertise shard beforehand, as well as obtaining Optimizer, and fully enhance both until they become Skill Shards, as well as raising their Grades to 9 before confronting her. Additionally, equipping one or two Lethality Rings will greatly increase the damage dealt with Critical Hits (likely more so than all other Accessories, depending on the player's stats).

Most of her attacks can be blocked with Directed Shield, including the rotating double flame beam.

All of Gremory's body is vulnerable. A hit and run tactic seems to work better than trying to use Invert to attack her while on the ceiling. Just be mindful that she deals damage on contact and that she'll constantly fly around trying to bump into you.

After sustaining enough damage, Gremory will enter her second phase. Be careful at this point and keep a medium distance from her, as she'll quickly open her arms to cast her special attacks, which may instantly hit you if you're still trying to attack her with the Zangetsuto.

During the course of the fight, she'll constantly summon moon-shaped energy blades that will launch toward you. The yellow blades can sometimes be destroyed simply by dashing through them with the Accelerator shard, although other times they'll still damage you (this only seems to happen when they are still materializing), so try to block them with the Directed Shield instead. The red blades are more resilient and cannot be stopped this way, so always block them with the Directed Shield.

Another of her attacks is quickly releasing five homing dark energy balls that inflict Curse status. These can also be blocked with the Directed Shield. It is also advisable to fully enhance Resist Curses before this fight (dropped by Kunekune), as it may nullify some of Gremory's cursing attacks.

When she casts the Innes attack, be ready to get on the move. This attack will follow you all across the room for a while; so, if you get cornered and/or if Gremory is in the way, quickly start performing high jumps, or use Invert to land on the opposite surface and this way have more space to move around. She telegraphs this move by making a brief stop, doing a pose and emitting light; so, if you see her doing this, quickly start moving or the attack will appear underneath you and instantly hit you.

Curse of the Moon[]

Gremory has two phases to her fight in this game. The first phase is within the Hellhold, and consists primarily of Gremory controlling the Dark Swarm and conjuring orbs around herself. The swarm can be avoided by standing on certain platforms, though Gremory herself does not make this easy as she sometimes floats over the needed platform. She signals her swarm by raising her hand, which glows. Gremory also frequently conjures damaging orbs around herself. These can be destroyed with attacks, but are frequently renewed.

The second phase starts as the floor rises up, bringing the player to the top of a tall tower, where the moon is visible. In this stage, Gremory alternates between three attack patterns: First, Gremory conjures waves of crescent blades, which fly at the player. These come in two types, yellow and red. The red blades fly at the player in one motion. The yellow blades fly at the player in two moves. The second pattern starts with Gremory opening dimensional portals, calling down demonic spears. The can be avoided by centering the hero on the platform as the first four spears fall, then move to one side as the last two fall. By damaging the eyes on the spears, platforms appear, allowing the player to strike at Gremory's head. Gremory then follows up with a torrent of energy that sweeps downward across the stage. The third and final pattern starts being used after Gremory takes significant damage. She produces waves of small energy spheres from the tips of her wings, blocking off the sides of the platform. The energy briefly attacks the middle of the stage as well, which can be avoided with a well-timed jump. While doing this, Gremory charges up an attack similar to her Curse of The Moon attack from Ritual of the Night. Unleashing this, a large red moon crashes down, creating a pillar of fire that damages everywhere except the edges of the platform.

During the second phase of the fight, additional blue pots are dropped when destroying the crescent blades and lanterns on the spears.

Trivia[]

  • Gremory in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night serves a similar role to Death in the Castlevania series, being a secondary antagonist and a servant to the main antagonist. She also moves and attacks in a similar fashion by forming blades that fly at the player. In Classic Mode and Curse of the Moon 2, she matches Death's gameplay role in some Castlevania games as the last boss before the final boss gauntlet.
  • Gremory is the only female boss in Classic II: Dominique's Curse.
  • In Curse of the Moon, Gremory only has a desperation attack when playing as Zangetsu with no allies, as the regular version of her boss fight does not, and the attack will result in an instant Game Over should it not be properly countered; she shares this latter characteristic with Corrupted Zangetsu.
  • In Boss Revenge Mode, most of Gremory's attacks deal either 4, 44, or 444 units of damage by default. The only exceptions to this are Abenzera, which deals 160 units, and Curse of the Moon, which deals 255.
