Greatswords, abbreviated as G Swords in-game, are a class of weapons in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. This class also comprises Great Axes.
Description[]
Greatswords are long and heavy swords that due to their weight must be wielded with both hands. The weapon is swung in an overhead arc with a slamming motion toward the front, covering the entire immediate area above and in front of the player. Because of this, Greatswords are very useful for hitting enemies that are either above the player, flying enemies, or enemies that are only vulnerable on their heads or another hard to reach weak spot (like some bosses).
The Greatsword class also comprises an assortment of battle axes which behave in the same manner. However, because the blade of an axe is only attached near the tip of the handle, this means that when attacking, only the further part of the swing will be harmful, leaving the player vulnerable on the inner part, where the handle is.
Due to their cumbersomeness, Greatswords are notably slow during their attack and the player will remain unable to move until the entire swinging animation is finished. This can be alleviated to some extent by first jumping before attacking in order to let the swinging animation end while in midair, and once landing, be ready to jump and attack again.
Usage of the Greatsword Expertise Passive Shard speeds up the swinging animation, making Greatswords more efficient during standard combat. Additionally, there are other equipable items that can further improve the player's attacking speed.
Almost all Greatswords have the Slash attribute with just very few exceptions, where a blunt material replaces the metal blade, dealing Strike damage instead.
