Gebel (ジーベル Jīberu ) (pronounced JEE-bell) is a recurring character in the Bloodstained series. He was a close friend of Miriam, but turned evil due to being corrupted by the Crystal Curse. He was introduced as the initial main antagonist of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, and reappeared as a playable character in the spinoff, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon and its sequel, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2.
He also serves as one of the bosses for Stage 5 of Classic Mode, alongside Gremory and, in Normal and Hard difficulties, Dominique.
Official description
- Original host for the magi-crystal curse that summons demons to the planet. Gebel was the only one to survive its effects at such a high level. He destroyed the guild that created him, but in doing so realized he was no longer human and had no place on Earth. This in turn, lead him to summon the demon castle from hell to appear on the planet.
- It is said that his real purpose in summoning the castle was to give Miriam a place of her own, but as his Magi-crystal disease progressed, he soon forgot his own reasoning. The more he surrounded himself with hell-spawn, the quicker the magi-crystals engulfed his body. He continues to plot the downfall of man, and how to best convince (or use) Miriam to achieve his dark ambition.
History
Ritual of the Night
“ | A Shardbinder who grew up with Miriam and was raised by the Alchemy Guild. He was sacrificed in the great demon summoning, and was the only one besides Miriam to survive. Enraged, he slaughtered his supposed "family", the Alchemists, and disappeared. While Miriam slept, Gebel grew older. Now, he has returned to England with a horde of demons and a hellish castle at his command. (Age: 30) | „ |
~ Terms description |
Gebel was one of the many unfortunate children that were chosen by the Alchemy Guild to become Shardbinders test subjects. Despite his terrible situation, growing up Gebel was able to find some solace in the company of Miriam, a fellow Shardbinder, and Johannes, a young and idealistic Alchemist, innocent of the crimes of his superiors. At the time, he used to wear glasses.
When the great ritualistic sacrifice of Shardbinders planned by the Guild took place, Gebel miraculously survived the process, the only one lucky to do so, for unbeknownst to everyone, including Gebel himself, he was of exorcist's descent. Enraged by what they had done, Gebel used his newfound powers to slaughter as many members of the Alchemy Guild he could find, before disappearing to parts unknown while taking with him the Liber Logaeth, the Enochian book that had allowed the Alchemists to tamper with demonic powers in the first place. The exorcist magic in his blood, which had saved his life, continued to partially stave off and slow down the Crystal Curse of the crystal embedded in him, allowing Gebel to endure it for the next decade, even while it severely disfigured him.
Unfortunately, the botched great demon summoning had caused countless tragedies across all of Europe; one victim of such tragedy, Dominique Baldwin sought vengeance against God for allowing it to happen, and to accomplish such ruthless plan she forged an alliance with the powerful demon Gremory. Eventually, Gremory managed to find and kidnap Gebel, brainwashing him and forcing him to summon the Hellhold, the demon's castle, in the human world causing a second mass invasion of demonic beings.
Like most of the other bosses, if Gebel is defeated without taking any damage, an extra, purely honorary Boss Medal (the Gebel Medal) will be rewarded.
Curse of the Moon
Gebel is a playable character in this game. He attacks by sending forth a company of three bats and can transform himself into one at will, granting him access to out of reach areas.

Design
Koji Igarashi asked the designers to make the coloring for Gebel feature red, and explained that his vision of Gebel was that his body was almost completely overtaken by the magi-crystals. At first, his design had more clothing, but this was changed as IGA thought Gebel would be open about showing people his crystal skin. The mask was added because IGA imagined that Gebel's face was the very last thing to be engulfed by the magi-crystals, and it helped evoke the sense that he was too late to stop it.[5]
Powers and abilities
Curse of the Moon 1 and 2
Note: Due to possessing only a single sub-weapon, breaking blue sub-weapon lanterns as Gebel drops weapon points instead.
- Summon Darkness: Gebel's main means of attack. He attacks with three short-range bat-shaped projectiles, which are fired in an upward spread. Hitting all three bats against an enemy does respectable damage.
- Immortal Metamorphosis: Gebel's only sub-weapon, which transforms him into a bat that can fly in any direction. Weapon points are consumed during use.
- Siphon Blood: Attacking during Metamorphosis results in a forward charge, which recovers a small amount of health if it hits an enemy.
- Quick Ascend: By consuming additional weapon points, Gebel can quickly fly upwards.
- Cancel Metamorphosis: Using the sub-weapon action again exits Metamorphosis.
Etymology
Gebel is a notable surname that originated in Belgium and is derived from the German word, gabel. The word itself translates to "fork", and those who lived near a fork in a road or river often carry it as a given name.

Trivia
- Gebel's ability to take the form of a bat in Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon is a callback to Alucard's ability to do the same in the Castlevania series.
