The Furnace of Dis is a location in Classic II: Dominique's Curse. It is the fourth dungeon and the last one before the final area, the Pandemonium. It is the dwelling of Gremory, one the four Dukes of Hell that rule Limbo, and is implied to serve as her torture dungeon.[2]
Overview[]
The dungeon begins with a corridor made up of three "floors" that are connected by stairs. The ceiling at the top of lined with spikes while the floor at the bottom is broken up by spike-filled pits. Traversal is made more complicated by the fact that some of the tiles in this corridor are illusions that Dominique will fall through; the True Sight is useful here as it reveals the fake tiles. The newly introduced Gold Knights patrol the upper two floors of this corridor while Cannon Mortes shoot projectiles across the bottom floor. A wall on the bottom right side of this section contains the thirteenth Logaeth page, which can be uncovered with the Block Breaker.
After the illusory corridor, the path continues past spike-lined pits and swinging pendulum blades. Careful timing is necessary to jump over the spikes without being hit by the swinging blades nor the Bats that periodically fly across this section. A staircase leads down to an area where guillotine-like moving platforms must be jumped on to avoid surfaces that are completely lined with spikes. At the left edge here, Summon Circle can be used to reach a safe alcove which contains the fourteenth Logaeth page in another breakable wall.
A moving platform leads down to a section with lava at the bottom and spikes on the ceiling; both of these hazards must be avoided by jumping on more guillotine platforms without being hit by their undersides. A door leads to a corridor with more spikes and guillotine platforms alongside a Wisp that spawns in mid-air and a Wall Dragon that guards a staircase down to the left. The following corridor features Maledictions, which can petrify Dominique on contact, leaving her vulnerable to both the guillotine platforms' undersides and the spike-lined ceiling that they can slam her into. A breakable wall on the right here leads to a chest that contains an Ofuda Charm.
After some more stairs and another Wall Dragon, the path continues in a corridor with fewer environmental hazards but with respawning Kunekunes and more Maledictions. This is followed by a winding path where the greatest threats come from a Demon Lord, a Dullahammer, and Axe Outsiders; there is also a chest here that contains a Potion. Finally there is a fork in the road where one can go right past more lava pits, guillotines, and pendulum blades to find the fifteenth page of the Logaeth, or immediately go through a doorway on the left to fight Gremory in the next room.
After defeating Gremory, Dominique acquires the Dimension Shift. This Skill Shard allows her to teleport a short distance, which becomes useful in the next section, which features several large hanging cages. Some of these can be entered through staircases or breakable walls, but other require the Dimension Shift to pass into and out of. The enemies in this section include more Kunekunes, Axe Outsiders, Bats, and Demon Lords, of which some spawn inside the cages and others spawn on top of them. The uppermost cage here (in the middle of the room) contains the sixteen and final Logaeth page.
Trivia[]
- This dungeon is named after the City of Dis, a location in Dante's narrative poem The Divine Comedy, specifically its first part Inferno. In the story, Dis encompasses the sixth through the ninth circles of hell.
