A demon overlord who has been banished to another dimension inside a book.
~ Description from Ritual of the Night

The Eight Bit Overlord is an optional boss in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Description[]

The Eight Bit Overlord is the boss of the hidden 8-bit Nightmare stage. He is a powerful demon that controls fire. Fire damage deals considerable increased damage to the player (almost as twice as a standard physical attack); as such, it is recommended to equip gear that lessens damage received from this element for this battle (Flame Circlet, Flame Mail, Flame Scarf, Resist Fire, etc.). While he can be damaged anywhere on his body, he only takes significant damage if struck on the head, so developing a quick jumping and slashing technique is recommended or equipping a weapon that traces an overhead swing (like a greatsword).

The boss mainly attacks by spewing fireballs and by summoning large pillars and fountains of flame, as well as by constantly trying to bump into the player. As he sustains more damage during the course of the fight, all of his attacks will get upgraded in some form.

Like most of the other bosses, if the Eight Bit Overlord is defeated without taking any damage, an extra, purely honorary Boss Medal (the 8-bit Medal) will be rewarded.

Attacks[]

  • Constantly jumps all over the room in an attempt to bump into the player.
  • Jumps and hovers slowly in the air for a few seconds, tracking the player below as he does so, and then drops and slams on the ground in an attempt to crush them (telegraphing this by briefly turning red beforehand). When he lands, he produces two large fountains of fire that travel toward each side of the screen, left and right.
    • In its upgraded version, the boss also produces four fireballs that splash across the room from the spot he landed on, and each of them produces a pillar of flame, either vertically or horizontally, depending if it landed on the floor or a wall, respectively.
  • Performs a long, low height leap across the screen in an attempt to bump into the player. He telegraphs this move by extending his wings for a moment and then launching himself forward. Slide underneath him as he does so to evade it.
  • Spews nine fireballs all over the room's surfaces: floor, walls and ceiling; these remain on the spot they landed on for a moment and then erupt into large pillars of flame, either vertically (floor and ceiling) or horizontally (walls). Evade the fireballs as they are spewed by the monster, and also avoid stepping on/touching them while they are about to erupt, while also observing where the other flame pillars are going to appear to prevent staying on a dangerous spot. These fireballs can be destroyed by hitting them either in midair or on their landing spots, preventing with this more flame pillars to appear, and thus, lessening the overall threat of this attack.
    • In its upgraded version, as the fireballs are erupting into flame pillars, the boss also produces fountains of fire to further constrain the player's evading options.
  • Stays on one side of the screen and starts flapping his wings (turning red as he does so), producing large fountains of fire on both the floor and ceiling that travel toward the opposite side. The player should carefully time their (double) jumps and move accordingly to remain in the safe spaces left between both top and bottom flames.
    • In its upgraded version, he produces about four consecutive fountains on both the floor and ceiling. The ceiling ones appear two at a time, each entering the screen from each side.

Trivia[]

  • Despite almost exclusively using Fire based attacks, the Eight Bit Overlord doesn't have resistance against the Fire element.
  • Most of the Eight Bit Overlord's attacks (fireballs, fire fountains and flame pillars) can be nullified with Directed Shield, greatly reducing the difficulty of this boss fight.
  • This enemy is apparently based on Dracula's second form in the original Castlevania, where he transforms into a similar demon and has similar attack patterns.
