A scrap of cloth once worn by a demon.

The Dreadful Rag is a Material in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Description[]

The Barbatos, first found in the early region of Garden of Silence and then the room in the Entrance just before the boss battle with Zangetsu, is an extremely useful enemy to farm, and not just because its dropped Hemp provides a vital early source of Gold when sold off. Its dropped True Arrow is an excellent directional shard to farm and empower, and its commonly dropped Dreadful Rag is used in a surprisingly vast number of crafts and shard enhancements. For example, three Dreadful Rags are used to advance through the middle three ranks of True Arrow, adding to the number of arrows projected per use. The similar Chaser Arrow, a homing equivalent dropped by the Barbaros' later Leraje cousin in upper Livre Ex Machina, also takes three Dreadful Rags to advance through its middle three ranks.

There are two other crafted items enabled by the Dreadful Rag that can be created before fighting Zangetsu. By using a Cotton from the earliest blue chests and five AP Rounds (which the Barbatos itself rarely drops in sets of five), you can create a Cowboy Hat a fair time before you can scrounge up the materials needed to complete Abigail's first eight quests (with the eighth reward being a Cowboy Hat awarded for "free"). This 5-DEF hat adds 2 STR and a 50% bonus to firearm damage. The other item is the overall superior Tea Dress, which is created using two Cotton in conjunction with three Dreadful Rags.

Shortly afterward, when you explore the lower levels of Dian Cécht Cathedral, the Buers that make their first appearance here drop Leonine Pelts that let you craft the direct upgrade to the Tea Dress, the Mantua. (That said, the vastly more defensive Silver Breastplate can already be crafted before fighting the Craftwork boss by farming Silver from the Bloodbringer and getting a Sinister Rag to drop from the Cyhyraeth.) Because the Buer here drops both Leonine Pelts and Monster Fangs, two DLC armors can be upgraded into their second forms at this point, both of them using two Dreadful Rags each: the Half-Genie Outfit (which gains 6 DEF, 1 STR, and 3 INT), and the Miri Dress (which gains 8 DEF and 2 INT).

After defeating Craftwork and using its shard to gain access to the rest of Garden of Silence, it becomes possible to use two Monster Furs dropped by the Simians in the area to help craft a Kung Fu Vest. Even disregarding the Silver Breastplate you could already be wearing at this point, doing this is worthless because a pre-crafted Kung Fu Vest can be found in a chest in the right edge of the main outdoor screen with the stagecoach.

The next stage of whip after the easily acquired Thorn Whip, the Flame Whip, can be crafted using two Dreadful Rags, two Durable Leathers dropped by Decarabias in the eastern region of Forbidden Underground Waterway, and a Ruby found in blue chests in the same area (as well as dropped by the Buer Armors in the area). Even though Flame Whips are used as materials for advancing through the middle ranks of the Whip Expertise shard much later on, if you are not planning to use whips as your primary weapon, you are better off letting the Rul'sha drop the completed form of it (at a 4% base rate) in lower Livre Ex Machina, with its much later Vul'sha cousin in Hidden Desert also dropping it at a 10% base rate.

During and after the train ride sequence in the Bridge of Evil, you can get the Assassin to drop the Flying Dagger conjure shard, which increases the number of daggers it casts as you rank it up; the first three ranks take one Dreadful Rag each. Similarly, the Ninja in the late-game Oriental Sorcery Lab drops the Shuriken conjure shard, and ranking that up increases the number of shurikens thrown per cast; the first three ranks of that also take one Dreadful Rag each.

Finally, once you have defeated Bathin in Underground Sorcery Lab, you can access the secret Dead Lands area by wearing the storebought Crown of Creation on an eastbound trip on the train and get the novelty Familiar: Archer shard to drop from the Breeder boss. The pixelated archer familiar becomes a "more powerful familiar" as you rank it up, and all eight of its ranks require one Dreadful Rag each, with the first three ranks only requiring the one rag each.
