Directed Shield is a Directional Shard in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
Description[]
When Direct Shield is cast, an impenetrable shield will appear on Miriam's hand that can block almost all attacks and projectiles in the game. At a higher Rank the shield becomes larger and thus covers more space; at its final Ranks it becomes the same greatshield carried by the Shield Outsider, which is precisely the enemy that drops this shard.
While it is a Directional Shard and thus the shield can be aimed at any direction, at higher Ranks it can automatically block attacks from all directions, not necessarily requiring Miriam to be pointing the shield toward the attack's source, thus making her practically invincible and allowing her to rush into hazards or even pass through enemies without taking damage.
However, at 50 MP/s it also has a high MP cost, and when the shield is summoned the player's MP reserves will quickly drain, so it is advisable to always carry a good amount of Ether-type potions for its sustenance, especially in the early game, when Miriam's MP pool still isn't that high, as well as during boss fights. MP consumption can be alleviated in the late game, though, when Miriam's MP reserves have become larger and her MP Quickcharge rate has increased by eating foods that raise this stat. At this point, the Directed Shield can be summoned and held out for a considerably long amount of time, enough to properly fight most advanced bosses and without having to worry much about running out of MP.
Directed Shield is also relatively easy to enhance, as its required Materials are usually easy to come by. It can also be acquired relatively early in the game, right after collecting the Double Jump shard in the Livre Ex Machina; the player can then farm the Axe Outsider found at the Entrance, which also conveniently drops Mithril, a material required to enhance the final two Ranks of this shard.
