The Cocytus Ridge stretches across the center of Limbo. Not many demons know that.
~ Ninja in Almadel

The Cocytus Ridge is a location in Classic II: Dominique's Curse. It is an icy mountain path that leads through the center of Limbo, from the Central Well at its foot to the Forest of Madness in the west and the town of Notoria at the mountain peak.

Overview[]

From its foot at the Central Well, the Cocytus Ridge begins on icy but uneven terrain outdoors. During the New Moon, Celaenos frequently fly in here to drop Simians, but during the Dead Moon, a Silver Wolfman blocks the path instead.

A staircase leads to the inside of a mountain, where a complicated climb follows on a combination of natural offshoots of the terrain, wooden platforms, and stairs. The road sometimes diverges into separate routes, though there is little difference between these in appearance or danger. At the bottom of the shaft lies a bottomless pit. During the New Moon, the enemies that impede the climb and may knock Dominique into the abyss include Bats, Gusions, Bone Mortes, Cannon Mortes, and Silver Wolfmen. The Dead Moon removes the Gusions but adds more Bats (mostly freely flying ones) and a Dullahammer.

Near the top, there is an exit to the left that leads back to the Forest of Madness, one of the earliest areas explored in the game. The way down to the Forest of Madness involves a jump down a high ledge in that area, making it a one-way route unless the Summon Circle skill is used to go back up. Continuing upward on a staircase instead will lead to the town of Notoria at the mountain peak.

Early in the ascent through the Cocytus Ridge, there is an enclosed room that can be entered by breaking the walls on either side with the Block Breaker; there is a chest inside this room that contains a Plunder Ring. Later on, after defeating Gremory, her Dimension Shift skill can be used to reach an otherwise inaccessible space near the bottom of the mountain, where a different chest contains the Devil's Ring. The Devil's Ring in turn makes it possible to summon and fight the Revenant in Tartarus, which, although not necessary to finish the game, is necessary to attain the good ending.

Trivia[]

  • This area is named after Cocytus, one of the rivers of the underworld in Greek mythology. Cocytus is associated with wailing and lament in general. The Cocytus Ridge's appearance as an icy mountain is probably inspired by Dante's Inferno, where Cocytus appears as a frozen lake in the ninth and deepest circle of hell. The other four rivers of the mythological underworld provide the names for the Stygian Marsh, the Lethe Cavern, Lake Acheron, and Phlegethon.
