Stage 1 is the first stage in Classic Mode in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Overview[]

The stage begins in a dark and slightly forested area outside the Hellhold. This outdoor area contains no enemies or other hazards, so the player is free to stock up on items from purple lanterns before they pass an open drawbridge into the castle proper.

The opening area of the castle is a very wide, carpeted corridor reminiscent of the Entrance zone in the main story, but more ornate with a background that features stained glass windows, statues of angels and portraits of humans. Groups of Mortes run across the floor while Gieremunds wait on platforms above. The player can either deal with the Gieremunds as they drop down to give chase, or they can walk up staircases to confront them on the platforms. The player soon dives through a fountain of blood into an underground area.

Through the blood fountain, the player drops into a water-filled dungeon aesthetically similar to the Forbidden Underground Waterway. Here they are attacked by Seamas which jump from the water, as well as Bats that hang from the ceiling and fly toward the player when they come close. The wall to the left contains restorative Food which the player can take to replenish HP if needed. Taking a staircase back up, the player arrives in a tall shaft similar to the Dian Cécht Cathedral, with bells, statues and more stained glass windows in the background. They must ascend it through careful platforming while avoiding more Mortes, Bats and Gieremunds.

After reaching the top of the shaft, the player goes right and comes to a symmetrical arena where they fight the boss of the stage: a Giant Bat. After the Giant Bat's defeat, a heart drops and the player must touch it to end the stage.

Trivia[]

  • This stage is very similar in layout and enemy placement to Block 1 from Castlevania, to the point where some level design elements appear to be straight recreations. Both stages also end with a boss battle against a Giant Bat which attacks by flying around and sometimes shooting projectiles.
  • The first portrait inside the castle depicts Koji Igarashi, the producer and director of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The portrait is also present near the entrance to the 8-bit Nightmare in the main game.
