~ Alfred in Ritual of the Night |
Alfred (アルフレッド Arufureddo ) is a recurring character featured in the Bloodstained series. He is an old but skilled alchemist, a former member of the infamous Alchemy Guild, who had upset Miriam's quest to explore the Hellhold, find and vanquish Gebel. He was introduced in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and later reappeared as a playable character in the two spin-off games, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2.
Encountered as a boss in Ritual of the Night, Alfred, like most of the other bosses, will reward an extra, purely honorary Boss Medal (the Alfred Medal) if defeated without taking any damage. Also, since he put a warding seal to a certain room of the Hidden Desert, his defeat is required for Miriam to retrieve the Deep Sinker shard.
When playing with Zangetsu, or Bloodless, Alfred is one of the bosses required to be defeated in order to reach the Den of Behemoths; additionally, due to the aforementioned seal, his defeat is required for Bloodless if she wants to retrieve the Blood of Flight, a Blood Shard crucial to reach the Oriental Sorcery Lab.
Official description[]
- Alfred is one of the alchemists responsible for the demon-summoning uproar ten years ago. He was Johannes's mentor, and a father figure to both Johannes and Miriam, but he's lost his former self as he heads to the castle seeking the Book of Logaeth in Gebel's possession. Quiet and intelligent, Alfred's alchemic ability was unmatched even among his fellow alchemists.

Powers and abilities[]
Curse of the Moon[]
- Rod: Alfred's main weapon. Since it is short and slow, it should only be used if Alfred himself is the only character available. To compensate, hits occasionally rewards WP.
- Burning Sphere: One of Alfred's sub-weapons. A flaming barrier that blocks any destructible projectiles that hit it, and can also hit enemies. The barrier can carry over even after switching between characters.
- Frostcalibur: One of Alfred's sub-weapons. A large icy sword that is sent straight forward. It is capable of freezing water, lava, enemies, lamps, destructible projectiles, and even bosses. Frozen enemies and liquids can be defeated in a single strike.
- Soul Vision: One of Alfred's sub-weapons. A projection of Alfred is summoned directly in front or behind him. The distance of its summon can be adjusted by holding up or down before use. It can pick up items and upgrades, as well as attack in unison with Alfred. In Curse of the Moon 2, attacks that target based on position will prioritize the clone instead of Alfred himself.
- Voltaic Ray: Alfred's ultimate sub-weapon, which can only be obtained by breaking special green lanterns. In Curse of the Moon, these can be fired one at a time, with a max of three on-screen. In Curse of the Moon 2, all three are fired at once, with the cost being adjusted to suit this change. In both appearances, the sub-weapon fires lightning balls that repeatedly home in on enemies until their duration ends.
Quotes[]
- "I wasn't about to allow the book to fall into your hands."
- "...Revenge, perhaps. For your parents?"
- "Very well. This sigil was not meant for you, but we are far enough from the castle that if it can contain you here..."
- "This power you have is even greater than I imagined. I must get back the book!"
- "I have to make it happen. I've waited too long for this chance. Our last chance..."
- "At last, the Liber Logaeth is mine."
- "Sh...she stole it..."
- "M...Miriam... Forgive me for dragging you into all this."
- "I am responsible for all your misfortunes. I hope...you can find it in your heart...to..." (his last words to Miriam)

Trivia[]
- It is possible that three of Alfred's sub-weapons in Curse of the Moon are named after Gunvolt's special skills in Azure Striker Gunvolt, the flagship series of Inti Creates.
- Burning Sphere is comparable to Lightning Sphere (localized as Astrasphere).
- Frostcalibur can be compared to Sparkcalibur (localized as Luxcalibur).
- Voltaic Ray is comparable to Gunvolt's ultimate skill, Voltic Chains (localized as Voltaic Chains).
- While there is no obvious counterpart to Soul Vision in the games themselves, one of the scrapped skills in Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 was named Shadow Striker, which appeared to fulfill a similar function.
