A jet black dragon that brings death to all before it.
~ Description from Ritual of the Night

The Abyssal Guardian is a boss and later a normal enemy in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Description[]

A colossal black dragon with red horns and claws that dwarfs the already large standard Dragon. It has three attacks:

  • Raises one of its frontal legs and slams it on the ground, producing a dark energy explosion that in turn produces two fiery waves that travel across the floor, one toward the left and the other toward the right.
  • Fires a powerful energy beam from its mouth. It starts shooting this ray in an angled upward direction and slowly redirects it toward the bottom for the duration of the attack.
  • Quickly turns sideways and wails with its tail, sending the player flying backward.

Additionally, while not an attack itself, the dragon will sometimes leap backward to reposition itself, flapping its wings forward as it does so, and hitting the player if they happen to be on their way.

All of the Abyssal Guardian attacks are well telegraphed, although they are performed quickly afterward. As such, the player is advised to let the dragon do the first move, so they can react accordingly and employ the proper countermeasures. Its energy beam covers almost the entire area where the player is likely positioned, although it leaves a safe spot in front of its frontal legs; so, when the dragon is preparing to perform this attack, quickly crouch right in front of it and start attacking to inflict some serious damage.

Some of the dragon's attacks have very powerful knockback that can send the player back to the previous room, thus resetting the monster.

In the Livre Ex Machina, the Abyssal Guardian acts as the end boss and guards the entrance to the Hall of Termination. Like most of the other bosses, if this boss Abyssal Guardian is defeated without taking any damage, an extra, purely honorary Boss Medal (the Abyssal Guardian Medal) will be rewarded.

In the Den of Behemoths, it can be found as a semi-common enemy, often in company of other powerful enemies (like Marbas and the Silver Wolfman). All Abyssal Guardians in a room will spawn facing toward the side from which the player entered; so, if the latter can find a way around them, they'll be able to catch them by surprise from the rearguard.
