This page is about the location. For the crafting material, see 8-bit Nightmare (material).

The 8-bit Nightmare is a location in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. It is a short stage in the style of classic 8-bit games. It can be accessed through a secret room in the Hall of Termination.

Progression[]

A relatively short Easter egg level that follows a similar aesthetic to classic 8-bit platformer games, and is similarly accompanied by 8-bit styled music. To reach it, in the Hall of Termination, destroy the ceiling of the vertical room that is outside the Save and Warp Rooms of that area, then head left past some treasure chests, a Gamigin and a Bloodbringer, and destroy the left wall. In the next room, there'll be a portrait of Bloodstained's producer and director, Koji Igarashi, as well as a bookcase emanating dark energy. Enter the bookcase to access the 8-bit Nightmare level.

The level is reminiscent of an old haunted castle. Only three (and unique) enemies are encountered in this level: the Eight Bit Zombie, Eight Bit Ghost and Eight Bit Skull. Since this area is the only place where these enemies appear, it is also the only place where their respective Shards can be acquired in the game. Additionally, there are a few fire trap pits the player must avoid.

The boss of this stage is the properly named Eight Bit Overlord, a powerful demon that controls fire. After completing the level, a green treasure chest will appear back in the room with IGA's portrait, containing an 8-bit Nightmare item, a crafting material that allows special weapons to be evolved to their final 32-bit versions.

Other modes[]

All playable characters reach this area in the same way as Miriam does. However, it contains no items for Zangetsu or Aurora.

Bloodless Mode[]

The area contains one collectible item for Bloodless: one of two instances of the Scarlet Thrust. This will likely be the second one she acquires, in which case it serves as an upgrade that allows her to charge the Scarlet Thrust for a stronger attack.

Trivia[]

  • This stage pays homage to classic 8-bit games, especially the Castlevania series, which the Bloodstained franchise is a spiritual successor of.
    • The portrait of Koji Igarashi at the entrance of this level further supports this reference, as he was a renowned director and producer of the Castlevania series for many years.
  • If the player opens the map while inside the 8-bit Nightmare, it will display the playable character in an empty area southeast of the game world proper.
